The Literacy Crisis in Kern County Literacy rates in Kern County have been a growing concern. According to the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP), in 2019, only 33% of students met or exceeded grade-level standards in English Language Arts (ELA). By 2023, this figure remained alarmingly low, with just 35% meeting the same standards. These numbers highlight the urgent need for initiatives that promote early childhood literacy.
How the Dolly Parton Imagination Library Helps The Dolly Parton Imagination Library is a free book-gifting program designed to inspire a love of reading in children from birth to age five. Every month, registered children receive a new, high-quality, age-appropriate book in the mail, at no cost to their families. This program aims to ensure that every child has access to books, helping to improve literacy rates and provide a strong foundation for future learning. In Kern County, over 8,200 children are currently enrolled in the program. However, there’s still much work to be done. The Junior League's goal is to enroll an additional 3,200 children by the end of 2025, ensuring even more young learners have the tools they need to succeed.
