Explore the enriching ESL Program offered through School Site Programming, a collaborative initiative with the Kern Literacy Council (KLC) committed to elevating English language proficiency and fostering cultural integration. Designed for three semesters—Fall, Spring, and Summer—the program follows a structured curriculum, featuring ESL Level 1 in Fall, ESL Level 2 in Spring, and ESL Level 3 in Summer.
A standout feature of the program is its accessible online format, allowing parents to undergo assessments and receive instructions through Burlington English, the Learning Management System (LMS) employed. Under the guidance of a proficient ESL instructor experienced in online education, students engage in diverse assessments, including quizzes, assignments, and reading diaries, to ascertain their ESL proficiency level.
Beyond language acquisition, the program extends its support by providing students with new books to take home, building their personal home libraries and encouraging continuous learning. Moreover, classes focus on essential life skills topics such as crafting resumes, applying for work, and scheduling doctor appointments, enriching the educational experience.
The program's comprehensive approach includes an inclusive orientation process, encompassing assessments, enrollment procedures, syllabus reviews, and course calendar overviews. Students are assessed on a Pass/Fail basis, enabling progression to the next ESL level upon successful completion. Currently, Kern Literacy Council is serving over 100 students in this program with a goal to expand course offerings throughout the county.
Furthermore, the program extends its support beyond language learning by offering:
Life Skills Focus: Classes delve into practical life skills, covering topics like resume building, job applications, and scheduling doctor appointments.
Referrals to Educational Resources: Students receive referrals to tutoring networks, GED programs, and Citizenship programs, facilitating holistic learning.
Career Mapping and Post-Secondary Connections: The program establishes connections with Bakersfield College, Bakersfield Adult School, CSUB, Employers Training Resource Center, and other community partners. This includes career mapping and support for post-secondary education and vocational training.
Join us in the School Site Programming ESL Program, where linguistic growth becomes a gateway to endless opportunities, creating a more connected and empowered community.
